Living with Joy in Challenging Times: 3 More Tools for Your Wellbeing

Last weekend, what was supposed to be a relaxing family day quickly turned into one of those parenting moments that test your patience and flexibility. As I found myself managing the boys' energy and expectations while also trying to stay on top of work messages, I had a moment of clarity.

Life will always bring chaos. Always. The question isn't how to eliminate chaos—it's how to find our center within it.

The Normal Response to Abnormal Circumstances

In my practice, I've been having deeper conversations with patients about this reality. So many people come in feeling guilty for being stressed or unhappy despite "having everything they need." But here's what I tell them: Your feelings are valid. Our bodies weren't designed for the pace and pressure of modern life. What you're experiencing is a normal response to abnormal circumstances.

The good news? Your body has an incredible capacity to heal when given the right support. Building on the tips from my previous post on managing stress, here are three more practices to help you find moments of joy and balance, even in challenging times:

Three More Practices for Balance and Joy

1. Create a "Sensory Reset" Practice

When stress hijacks our nervous system, engaging our senses can bring us back to the present moment. Develop your own 60-second sensory reset by identifying: something you can see in detail, something you can touch and really feel, something you can hear when you truly listen, a calming scent you can keep handy, and a small taste that grounds you (even a sip of water works). Engaging all five senses immediately shifts your brain out of stress mode.

2. Implement the "One Thing" Rule

When everything feels overwhelming, commit to doing just one thing that supports your wellbeing each day. It might be a 10-minute walk, preparing one nourishing meal, or going to bed 30 minutes earlier. One intentional act of self-care is infinitely better than a perfect plan that never happens.

3. Practice "Joy Spotting"

Our brains are wired to notice threats and problems. Counteract this by deliberately "collecting" moments of joy throughout your day. Maybe it's the perfect temperature of your morning coffee, a text from a friend, or a moment of laughter. Mentally note these moments or even keep a running list on your phone. This trains your brain to notice the good that exists alongside the challenges.

Returning to Foundations

Remember the "Control Inventory" exercise from my last post? That continues to be a cornerstone practice when life feels chaotic. Just yesterday, I had to pull out my own list when dealing with insurance paperwork that had me ready to throw my computer out the window!
